phone free update 9.21.26

Hi there!

The first phone free adelphi of the season felt fantastic. It was the first time for some, it was a homecoming for others. I'm feeling motivated and excited for my algorithm-less evenings to continue. Can’t wait to see you at one soon!

~~ And now, some thoughts on last week ~~

The first phone free adelphi of "Season 2" couldn't have happened on a more pleasant late-summer evening. Mid 70's, gorgeous sunset, low humidity. And I was perhaps more prepared than ever! I purchased 3 different 8-packs of Spindrift (lemon, grapefruit, raspberry lime), 3 different kinds of cheeses (brie, cheddar, manchego), cornichons, olives, and a fresh baguette from She Wolf bakery. I was stocked! I was ready! I was… nervous.

For context: the last phone free adelphi at my home was on Wednesday, July 1st. I wondered, had I forgotten how to host? Were my snacks too loud? Was I actually nervous or was it just that my stomach hurt because of that Wegman’s chicken shawarma bowl I bought the day before and ate too quickly?

Well, I’m happy to report that once the first person arrived, the nerves quickly vanished (stomach still kinda hurt though, tbh). A phone free vet arrived and I jokingly said, “Welcome home.” But after those two simple words left my lips, it resonated on a deeper level than I could have imagined.

I hadn't realized how much I really missed my little phone free night and burgeoning community. The cadence of a creative evening every Wednesday without screens has become a profound weekly break for me. And seeing people around the city (and country) start rebelling against the A.I. creep rapidly entering our lives, not to mention deleting social media, has been encouraging to keep fighting the good fight.

When we turn off our devices together in community and solidarity and share a night of creativity, beautiful connections are made. What will you make/who will you meet the next time you come over, turn off your phone, and get in flow?

Until then.
